Adware
Adware is a program that installs an item onto your computer to serve advertising to you. This is basically in the form of pop-ups, or it directs your browser's homepage to sites which serves advertising. This can be very annoying and can even cause your computer to freeze, or worse, interfere with the running of your programs.
Adware is often more treacherous in that it contains other hidden components. These hidden components are known as spyware.
Spyware
Spyware is a little program which resides on your PC, gathering information about you, such as your surfing habits, without your knowledge. It then relays this information to interested parties, such as advertisers. Even better, to spam you with! So, is it really worth the price of free to give up your privacy? However, not all free software programs are devious. There are some excellent, hassle-free software programs which do not contain any spy- or adware.
When spyware has taken over your browser or toolbars, it's very difficult to get rid of manually, especially when most people don't have the know-how. There are software programs to rid yourself of these pests. It is important to note that there are many free software programs that are bundled with adware/spyware. When the adware is removed, some of these programs will not function, which necessitates users to either remove the offending program, or continue to be bombarded with advertising.
More often than not, spyware or adware slows your computer down considerably. If your computer is suddenly sluggish, suspect spyware or adware (or even viruses and Trojans).
Prevention of Spyware/Adware/Malware
Be sure to read the end user licence agreement of any software you wish to install onto your PC, and run anti-spyware programs after you have installed the software. Prevention is better than cure, however, there are cures for these parasites.
- Always update critical patches for Windows.
- Use a firewall.
- Use updated antivirus software.
- Use SpywareBlaster which prevents it from installing in the first place.
- Run antispyware programs on a regular basis.
