Firewalls
What are firewalls? It can be best described as having a guard at the entrance to your house, allowing only authorised people inside. Firewalls can be configured to allow or block certain web traffic into your network or PC.
Hardware Firewalls
A hardware firewall is purely a software firewall running on a PC or specialised device purely dedicated to act as the firewall (or your policeman, so to speak).
Software firewalls
Firewalls prevent hackers from entering your computer, and stealing personal information such as credit card info. Although not 100% foolproof, it greatly improves the odds of keeping them out, whether you have dial up, cable or DSL.
Firewalls give you the option of either allowing or denying a program to access the Internet or your PC. Should a Trojan from a website try to download to your PC, your firewall will warn you. There are many firewall programs, amongst which are :
Sygate Personal Firewall

Kerio

Zone Alarm

Warning : Do not run two firewalls at the same time.
