Email Hazards
Ensure that you NEVER open attachments which you are not expecting, because you risk activating a virus. And even if you are expecting an attachment, rather save it to your hard drive, and scan with your antivirus program before opening it.
There are HTML emails which can infect unsuspecting users' computers. These HTML emails contain malicious code, which, even if only viewed from the preview pane, can infect your computer. Therefore be very careful opening up HTML emails.
Email Spoofing
Ok, so what is spoofing? It's falsifying/forging of an email address and email headers.
Why are email addresses Spoofed?
Email spoofing is often used to fool a user into divulging sensitive details such as passwords. For instance, an email can arrive declaring to be from an administrator requesting users to change passwords, threatening to suspend their account, thereby driving them to do so. Email spoofing, phishing and/or spamming are often combined so that the original sender may not be identified. Sometimes email is spoofed to discredit someone whose email address has been spoofed, by sending hateful and offensive email.
Viruses and worms have the ability to spoof email addresses. Many people end up with notices from ISP's, stating that an email could not be delivered, as the email contained a virus. This causes untold confusion. So, if you should end up with one of these emails, and you do not recognise the recipient, know that there has been a virus or worm at work.
