About Me
My name is Irene Uys, and I live in beautiful sunny South Africa, where the temperatures are very warm, and the sun is very harsh. I'm a divorcee, and don't have the pleasure of any children. I guess God has compensated by giving me lots of nieces and nephews (five of each, in fact). :-) Well, that's because I have five sisters.
I worked for the government here in my country for 17 years, doing teachers' salaries. We encoded documents for processing by the computer bureau. Of course, there were a lot of codes, but by the time I resigned, I knew most of the codes out of my head!
During my last 4 years there, they brought in desktop computers all connected via our network. It was bliss, not having to hand-code documents anymore, but entering all data straight into the computer.
However, I still had no Microsoft Windows experience. I knew our little system, but didn't know much about computers in general.
I was then employed by a bank, where they used Microsoft Windows. They used Corel WordPerfect Suite, and not Microsoft Office. A few years down the line, I decided to buy my own PC. I threw myself into learning everything I could. I had just heard about the Internet, but when I got connected, I was lost! Well, I didn't let that put a damper on anything. And no-one I knew, knew anything about the Internet either!
Four years down the line, I must say I have learned a lot, mostly self-taught. I joined a few computer help discussion groups, where I gained a lot of knowledge. I also signed up for a lot of newsletters, to learn about internet marketing. But one thing that really caught my interest, is PC and internet security. And the rest, as they say, is history. :-)
I have a lot of people to thank, who helped me on my way. In no particular order :
Barry Baker http://www.thebbakers.com
Dan Beal http://www.danbeal.com/publish.htm
Marion Stearns, known as The Admistress, who sadly didn't make it through Hurricane Katrina.
Marion's circle of ezine publishers http://www.admistress.com/column
The group Computer_Help_and_Discussion at Yahoogroups, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Computer_Help_and_Discussion/
as well as the My Computer Headaches group at Yahoogroups. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mycomputerheadaches/
I now run the office for a plumbing and building maintenance business, where we have not gone paperless yet, but I'm working on it. :-)
